Alice’s Flower Garden

When Alice left Wonderland she secretly took some of that magic with her, and it shows in her private flower garden. The brightly patterned flowers appear to move and change as the lights that shine from them change colors. A small rose garden blooms and dies over and over before your eyes, while two small flowers change their patterns dramatically from one moment to the next. Standing at eye-level, a giant sunflower is not only decorated with a bright geometric pattern that constantly shifts, but the light that shines from it’s center also dances from one petal to the next like hands of a clock sweeping across the face, leaving a new color and pattern in it's path.
Thank you for considering my installation for the 2023 LUSIO Lights Festival. This installation consists of 3 main components placed together to create a garden scene. The focal point will be a giant sunflower measuring about 5 feet across. Two smaller flowers will sit near the base of the sunflower. To one side of the flowers will be two rows of small roses to complete the garden. Each element will have its own lighting scheme.
The sunflower will be decorated with a complex geometric pattern with central lighting for each of the two layers of petals, and each layer will have complex programming to illuminate each petal individually for lots of fun effects. The two smaller flowers will have a simple pattern and will be lit individually with lights that will be programmed to fade and/or flash, but with less complexity and intensity than the sunflower. The rose garden will be lit by row with LED strip lights and will be programmed to color-fade at different speeds to activate their “blossoming” effect.
The following images and videos show mockup versions of the final product. I will create new patterns specifically for this project, and the final product will be made of archival ink prints laminated onto wood panels and sealed for all-weather protection. The shapes of the two small flowers is to be determined.
